My mother worked at the shipyard aso. I have a picture of her that says, "Richmond Shipyard Number Four of Kaiser Cargo, Inc. Richmond, California. She has a tag on her collar that says, Kaiser Corp, Richmond - Yard 4 / below that is AH4 and below that is a circle with a capital E and below that Richmond, California. It would be interesting to hear from someone that might have known her. God bless and God Bless America!!!

Hello My name is Karen My parents worked in the richmond shipyard. Many of my relatives worked there. They were so happy to have jobs. We lived in the special housing. After the war we moved to Ukiah. Do you know if the employees are listed on any paperwork? I would love to see the names. I visited the Red Oak and was on the top deck last summer. They must have been so cold working. i took a tour and The men working on the ship to resore it are very nice. Was the ship Midway built in the Richmond ship yards? Thanks

Thank you for this article! I am doing research on a book about Rosie the Riveter, and I have been searching and searching for articles like this - especially for articles that speak to the high number of injuries and deaths that occurred in war industries. I only wish that I could find an article that breaks down the deaths/injuries by sex. I am specifically looking for how many WOMEN were killed and injured while doing war work during WWII. For instance, could you give me the source of this part of the story?

*Of the 655 reported private shipyard fatalities in the nation during 1943 and 1944, vehicles or loads striking workers was the second most common type of accident (25 percent) after falls (39 percent). Half of the “strike by” accidents involved cranes.

Perhaps the primary source that it was gleaned from breaks it down by sex.

Thank you,
